- Gay Hay Elliott died on May 18, 2024 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was born on October 11, 1930 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to William Robert Hay and Nevelyn Farnell Hay, who preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Edward C. Elliott of Raleigh, her son, Christophe­r Robert Elliott (surviving spouse, Cindy) of San Diego, California, and her brother, Robert Hay of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mrs. Elliott graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, attended Baylor University and graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport. She received further education and certificat­ion in Speech Pathology from Eastern Illinois University and was also a graduate of the Legal Assistants Program at Meredith College in Raleigh. She taught in elementary schools in Connecticu­t and Louisville, Kentucky, and was a Speech Pathologis­t in Champaign County, Illinois.

Gay was married to Edward C. Elliott in 1953 and resided in New Haven, Connecticu­t where Mr. Elliott graduated from Yale Divinity School. They served in churches in North Carolina, West Virginia, and Illinois, returning to Raleigh in 1979 where he became Director of the Methodist Home for Children. Her late husband’s final vocational years were in serving as a family therapist in Johnston County.

The Elliotts have been active members of the congregati­on of Duke Chapel in Durham for over 40 years. As well as being an active participan­t in the congregati­on, she served as a Docent for the Chapel.

She was active in volunteeri­ng at the Vet School Clinic at NCSU, is a past President of Friends of the Library at Meredith. She has been a “lifelong learner” in active study in Encore (a senior continuing education program).

Mrs. Elliott is survived by her son, Ralph Edward Elliott and wife Mary of Freeport, Illinois. She was the grandmothe­r of four grandchild­ren, Brian Edward Elliott of Long Grove, Illinois, Sarah Kathleen Elliott of Chicago, Illinois, Ronan Elliott of New York, New York, Edward Elliott of San Diego, California and a great grandchild, David James Elliott of Long Grove, Illinois.

Any memorial donations in the memory of Gay Hay Elliott should be directed to The Friends of Duke Chapel Fund and The Springmoor Endowment Fund.

A visitation for Gay will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612.

A memorial service will occur Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 10:30 AM at the Auditorium at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community, 1500 Sawmill Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 PM at Raleigh Memorial Park.
