Fed­erer wins Hop­man Cup with Switzer­land for third time

Roger Fed­erer won the Hop­man Cup for a record third time af­ter de­fend­ing cham­pion Switzer­land beat Ger­many 2-1 on Satur­day in Perth, Aus­tralia.

Switzer­land took its fourth Hop­man Cup ti­tle over­all when Fed­erer and Belinda Ben­cic beat Alexan­der Zverev and An­gelique Ker­ber 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 (4) in the Fast4 for­mat in the mixed dou­bles de­cider.

In the men’s sin­gles, Fed­erer de­feated fourthranked Zverev 6-4, 6-2. Ker­ber lev­eled with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Ben­cic.

U.S. Open cham­pion Naomi Osaka of Ja­pan missed a chance to reach the Bris­bane (Aus­tralia) In­ter­na­tional fi­nal and move up to the No. 3 rank­ing with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Leisa Tsurenko. Tsurenko is 4-0 in fi­nals, and is hop­ing to ex­tend that streak when she takes on No. 5-seeded Karolina Pliskova, who beat Donna Ve­kic 6-3, 6-4.

Af­ter Osaka’s loss, Ja­panese flags were still wav­ing in the crowd when No. 2-seeded Kei Nishikori de­feated Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-2 in 66 min­utes. He’ll play fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win­ner over Jowil­fried Tsonga, in Sun­day’s fi­nal, where he’s hop­ing to claim his first ti­tle since Mem­phis in 2016.

Unseeded Cana­dian teenager Bianca An­dreescu beat third-seeded Suwei Hsieh 6-3, 6-3 to ad­vance to the fi­nal of the ASB Classic in Auck­land, New Zealand, against de­fend­ing cham­pion Ju­lia Go­erges. Go­erges beat Vik­to­ria Kuz­mova 6-1, 7-6 (6).

Roberto Bautista Agut didn’t waste his win over No­vak Djokovic as he won the Qatar Open by beat­ing To­mas Berdych 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the fi­nal.

Top-seeded Kevin An­der­son won his sixth ATP ti­tle when he re­cov­ered from 5-2 down in the de­ci­sive tiebreaker to beat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) in the Ma­ha­rash­tra Open fi­nal in In­dia.

Aryna Sabalenka got a con­fi­dence boost for the up­com­ing Aus­tralian Open af­ter beat­ing Ali­son Riske 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the Shen­zhen (China) Open fi­nal.


Mets get Brox­ton from Brew­ers: The New York Mets ac­quired out­fielder Keon Brox­ton from the Mil­wau­kee Brew­ers for re­liever Bobby Wahl and mi­nor lea­guers Adam Hill and Felix Va­le­rio. Brox­ton had four home runs, 11 RBIS and a .179 bat­ting av­er­age in 51 games for Mil­wau­kee last sea­son.

Shiffrin gets 7th straight slalom win: Mikaela Shiffrin dom­i­nated the first women’s World Cup slalom of 2019 in Croa­tia to match her per­sonal best win­ning streak in the dis­ci­pline with seven straight vic­to­ries.
