Federer wins Hopman Cup with Switzerland for third time
Roger Federer won the Hopman Cup for a record third time after defending champion Switzerland beat Germany 2-1 on Saturday in Perth, Australia.
Switzerland took its fourth Hopman Cup title overall when Federer and Belinda Bencic beat Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 (4) in the Fast4 format in the mixed doubles decider.
In the men’s singles, Federer defeated fourthranked Zverev 6-4, 6-2. Kerber leveled with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Bencic.
U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka of Japan missed a chance to reach the Brisbane (Australia) International final and move up to the No. 3 ranking with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Leisa Tsurenko. Tsurenko is 4-0 in finals, and is hoping to extend that streak when she takes on No. 5-seeded Karolina Pliskova, who beat Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-4.
After Osaka’s loss, Japanese flags were still waving in the crowd when No. 2-seeded Kei Nishikori defeated Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-2 in 66 minutes. He’ll play fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, a 7-6 (6), 6-2 winner over Jowilfried Tsonga, in Sunday’s final, where he’s hoping to claim his first title since Memphis in 2016.
Unseeded Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu beat third-seeded Suwei Hsieh 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, against defending champion Julia Goerges. Goerges beat Viktoria Kuzmova 6-1, 7-6 (6).
Roberto Bautista Agut didn’t waste his win over Novak Djokovic as he won the Qatar Open by beating Tomas Berdych 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the final.
Top-seeded Kevin Anderson won his sixth ATP title when he recovered from 5-2 down in the decisive tiebreaker to beat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) in the Maharashtra Open final in India.
Aryna Sabalenka got a confidence boost for the upcoming Australian Open after beating Alison Riske 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the Shenzhen (China) Open final.
Mets get Broxton from Brewers: The New York Mets acquired outfielder Keon Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers for reliever Bobby Wahl and minor leaguers Adam Hill and Felix Valerio. Broxton had four home runs, 11 RBIS and a .179 batting average in 51 games for Milwaukee last season.
