Clauda Shewmake Wilson 1936 – 2021

Clauda Shewmake Wilson, 84, passed away May 23, 2021 in Estancia. She was born Oct. 26, 1936 in Mountainai­r, to the late Leon and Pearl (Collins) Shewmake. The Shewmakes at one time owned the Western Auto store in Estancia, which was later renamed the Gambles store. As a child she attended the Estancia school system. In 1952 she married Gayle Steel and had two sons, Eddie and Brent. While in Arizona she worked with Motorola until the plant moved to Japan. Clauda had the opportunit­y to travel with the company to Japan, but she chose not to leave the United States. After many years of working in Arizona and Texas, she moved back to Estancia with the help of her friends, Lorena Coburn and Gloria Pohl. She enjoyed spending time at the Estancia Senior Citizens Center, reading, and going out with her friends. In 2010 Clauda had a heart valve operation which lead to many health complicati­ons. She was also preceded in death by both of her sons, Eddie and Brent Steel, and her brother, Sydney Shewmake. A graveside memorial service will be held August 19 at 11 a.m. at the Round Top Cemetery in Mountainai­r. Arrangemen­ts were entrusted to Harris-hanlon Mortuary in Mountainai­r.
