East Mtn. girls beat Rehoboth and grab first win over Bosque in 10 years
East Mountain High School’s girls soccer team has been on a roll lately.
The Lady Timberwolves bested Gallup’s Rehoboth Christian on the road this week, three days after rallying to beat Albuquerque’s Bosque School for the first time in 10 years.
With two second-half goals—one by senior Kaylee Baker and the other by freshman Berkeley Flammang—east Mountain (12-5-1) picked up a muchneeded 2-0 district win at Rehoboth on Oct. 19. It was the Lady T’wolves’ fifthconsecutive victory and kept their postseason hopes alive with one game left in the regular season.
The win over Rehoboth came on the heels of the Lady T’wolves’ come-frombehind victory over the Bosque Bobcats at home on Oct. 16.
With three goals late in the second half, two of them by Baker, East Mountain stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to capture a 3-2 victory over Bosque. It was the Lady T’wolves’ first win over the Bobcats since Sept. 14, 2011.
Bosque struck first with a goal in the 21st minute. The Bobcats padded their lead with another goal in the first 20 seconds of the second half. Then, with 13 minutes remaining in the game, Sierra Larson sparked East Mountain’s comeback with a short-range header in the 67th.
“It was Kayla’s [Salas’] pass, she crossed it, it was really a nice cross, and it just happened to hit the [Bosque] girl’s head or back or something, and it went in the air flying and I was able to just time it,” said Larson, who played the entire game with an injured left toe. She added, “The last game I think I broke it—it’s my baby toe, my whole foot is in pain.”
The momentum shifted the T’wolves’ way for good in the 74th when Amber Pino sliced a pass right through the legs of a Bosque defender and Baker secured it, took two touches and scored to tie the game 2-2. “I almost lost the ball, but I just kept going and it went in,” she said. “That’s why you never give up on the ball.”
Two minutes later, following an East Mountain throw-in, Baker nailed the game-winning goal.
“That outside defender just stood there, and I just went straight through them, and their keeper came out and I just touched it right in,” Baker said, adding, “It feels great, last home game of the season.”
“The goal from Sierra with the header really rallied everybody, the equalizer boosted us, and then the go-ahead goal was insane, so yeah, I’m blown away,” East Mountain head coach John Sabrowski said after the game, adding, “My hat’s off to all the players, they played a phenomenal second half. I haven’t beaten Bosque as coach, you know, this is my fifth season, so I’m very proud of the girls.”
East Mountain wraps up the regular season Oct. 22 at top-ranked Sandia Prep (14-3).
