East Mountain High School’s boys soccer team notched a 7-2 district win this week against the Rehoboth Christian Lynx in Gallup. The Oct. 19 victory came three days after the Timberwolves dropped a close district match at home against the Bosque Bobcats.

East Mountain senior Tyler Burnette led the T’wolves in scoring against Rehoboth Christian with two goals. Kyle Hofmann, Bodie Larson, Finn Macduffie, Gabriel Woodfin, and Wyatt Potter also chipped in a goal apiece.

The victory over Rehoboth was East Mountain’s sixth on the season—the most games the team has won under head coach John Larson. It also is the most victories for the T’wolves since the 2017 campaign.

“And maybe more importantly, we are now competitive with the best teams in the state in A/3A,” Larson said via email. “That includes Sandia Prep, Santa Fe Prep, and Bosque. We played all of them pretty well.”

In the Oct. 16 matchup with Bosque (12-5-2), East Mountain got on the board in the first half with a penalty kick and held a 1-0 lead at halftime. But the T’wolves surrendered two second-half goals and Bosque went home with the 21 win.

It was the fifth game this season that East Mountain lost by one goal.

Burnette punched in the penalty kick in the 11th minute after a Bosque defender got flagged for touching the ball with his hand inside the 18-yard box.

Bosque scored the equalizer in the 47th minute on a corner kick. Bosque scored the game-winning goal two minutes later with a direct free kick.

“We won the first half, they won the second half,” coach Larson said after the loss. “I was proud of the team, they played great. Holding Bosque to two goals is a pretty good day.”

East Mountain plays its final game of the regular season Oct. 22 at Sandia Prep.
