Marilyn (Nowling) Lockhart, 87, of Plainfield, Indiana passed away peacefully on November 27, 2023. She was born on October 10, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Joseph and Irene (Engle) Nowling. Marilyn graduated from Avon High School in 1954 and married Gene Lockhart on March 25, 1959. She was a devoted wife and loving mother of 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Marilyn worked in the Billing and Order Department at Allison’s for 5 years before taking time off to raise her family. After the youngest of their three children started school, she also returned to school and worked for 23 years on the Administrative Staff at Maple Elementary before retiring in 1993. Her compassion for the school children was evident when she supervised the lunch line. Marilyn would discreetly use her own money to help any child whose lunch account was empty because she wanted them to enjoy the same meal as their classmates. She also had a tender heart for animals and the many strays who found their way to a good home with Marilyn. Somehow they knew she had a soft spot for them as well as a soft lap.

Marilyn is survived by her husband of 64 years, Gene Lockhart; children Phillip (Chris) Lockhart, Lisa (Jim) Evans, Sheryl (Todd) Justus; grandchildren Whitney (Mike) Stoner, Kaitlin (Josh) Hagenow, Joseph Evans, William Evans, Ryan Justus (Carrie Ferguson), Emily Justus (Jon Lutes), Amy Justus and great grandchildren McKinzie and Emerie Stoner and Bolten, Barrett and Mahaley Hagenow.

Family and friends will gather on December 2, 2023 for a celebration of Marilyn’s life at Conkle Funeral Home, 76 N Avon Avenue, Avon, Indiana. Visitation will take place from 11:00am – 1:00pm with the service beginning at 1:00pm. Private Family Services will occur prior to Funeral Home services at Maple Hill Cemetery. All are welcome to gather immediately after Funeral Home services at Plainfield Friends Meeting facility located at 105 S. East Street Plainfield, Indiana to enjoy a light meal and share memories.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sheltering Wings PO Box 92, Danville, Indiana 46122.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at IU West Hospital and Life’s Journey for their excellent care of Marilyn. Online condolences may be shared at www.conklefuneralhome.com.
