Morris “Morrie” Maurer

INDIANAPOLIS - The heart of our family, a wonderful father, loving husband and thoughtful son left us on Saturday, February 17, 2024. Morrie Maurer, 72 was born and raised in Indianapolis to Eleanor and Sidney Maurer. He graduated from North Central High School and received both his BA and MBA from Indiana University.

Morrie was married to Jan for 43 years. Together they raised their three children Doug, Heather, and Whitney (Evan Kleymeyer).

Morrie was an exceptional father, placing his family above all else. From supporting his children in sports and mentoring them in their pursuits to sharing advice, Morrie was available to, supportive, and very proud of his kids until the day he died. Morrie was Jan’s partner, the two of them doing everything together as a team. They especially loved spending time with family and friends at their cottage on Lake Wawasee.

Morrie was employed with The Indiana National Bank from 1975 -1992. In 1993, along with his cousin Mickey Maurer, and good friend and colleague Phil Roby, Morrie saw an opportunity to start a local bank that would emphasize customer service and founded the National Bank of Indianapolis. There he served as President and CEO for 25 years. Upon retiring in 2018, he continued to serve on NBI’s Board of Directors. Under Morrie’s leadership, employees were treated like family – a value he saw modeled by his parents who owned and ran Atlas Supermarket – an Indianapolis landmark. Personal customer service was very important to Morrie. He had a strong moral compass that he relied on, navigating life at home as well as in the workplace.

We would be remiss to omit the fact that Morrie, once introduced to the world of cycling nearly twenty years ago, became a champion-level rider, traveling to compete in races and enjoying biking vacations with Jan. He cherished the many new friendships made within the cycling community.

Morrie lent his time and skill to numerous organizations, including Indiana Landmarks where he chaired the Investment Committee and served on their Board of Directors. At the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Morrie provided his expertise while serving on the Finance Committee. Morrie was an advocate for the arts serving as treasurer and on the board of the Indianapolis Civic Theater, and Arts Council of Indianapolis. Other past involvement included serving as a director of the Indiana State Board for Depositories, an alumni member of the Penrod Society, and many other organizations.

Morrie was the recipient of multiple awards that signified his devotion and commitment to his work and to the Indianapolis community. In 1997 he was named The Indiana Heartland Entrepreneur of the Year. 2019 saw him receive the Indiana Bankers Association Leader in Banking Excellence award. And in 2021 his alma mater, North Central High School, honored him with induction into the Alumni Hall of Fame.

The family will be holding a service in Morrie ‘s memory on April 11th at 2 pm at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, 600 W 70th St, Indianapolis, IN 46260.

In addition to his wife, Jan, their children and his mother Elanor, Morrie is survived by his granddaughter, Millie, mother-in- law, Jackie Cohen and brother, Gary.
