Fashion and style define this welcoming island store that keeps shoppers coming back

- BY PATRICIA LETAKIS

Before opening The Gold Parrot, Joe and Anne Fenoglio traveled and shopped the world. It was their passion, and it inspired the couple to open their own shop on Captiva, one they could fill with merchandise and fashion items that have special appeal. “We have tried to make The Gold Parrot a destination, a place that is fun to visit and shop at,” says Joe Fenoglio. “But most of all a welcoming store that makes you want to come back to the area just to visit the store again.”

And welcoming it is indeed. A big freshly painted white porch leads into a beach cottage accented with Victoriana detailing. Warm wooden floors, white rafters and rattan paddle fans give it a beachy vibe. Racks display the latest fashions—easy casual styles perfect for coastal living—for women, men and children. You’ll find Americanand Italian-made apparel. Look up and rows of sun hats in various shapes and styles line the walls and travel bags hang from the rafters. Among the brands carried at The Gold Parrot are Filson, Marella, TAJ and Paul & Shark, and swimwear from Vilebrequin, Vitamin A, Sundek and Robin Piccone.

Accessories include designer sunglasses from the YSL and Gucci collections, Ancient Greek Sandals, Hammitt bags, Moore & Giles leather luggage and others. If you love watches, check out the display counter showcasing the latest designs from Oris.

You’ll also find intriguing items for the home and lovely gifts, including tableware from Juliska and Vagabond House, and candles from Nest and Lafco. Among the unexpected are shipwreck artifacts. “My brother, Tom, and I are business partners and we dabble in salvage. We have amassed an interesting collection of shipwreck artifacts that we will pepper into the store to keep things very interesting,” says Fenoglio.

This is the kind of store that you’ll visit several times during your stay on Captiva and Sanibel—and no doubt return again on your next trip. “We want visitors to take home something special,” says Fenoglio, “something that will always remind them of our store and our magical islands.”
