Cuomo Blasts Monserrate’s ‘Shameful Record,’ Supports City Council Primary Opponent
On Thursday, August 31, governor Andrew Cuomo endorsed Francisco Moya for the Queens Democrat’s City Council primary, while criticizing his opponent disgraced former state Senator Hiram Monseratte. Cuomo said, “Contrasted with Hiram Monserrate's shameful record of domestic violence and abusing the public trust, the choice could not be more clear. I'm proud to endorse Francisco Moya for City Council in the 21st District and I know he will continue to be a true champion of Democratic values."
Out of all the primary races this year for City Council, the one with Moya versus Monserrate has been the most closely monitored. According to a report in the Daily News, “Monserrate, who previously served in the City Council and state Senate, in 2010 became the first state lawmaker to be expelled from the Legislature decades after he was convicted on misdemeanor charges tied to the slashing of his then girlfriend. Monserrate then served two years behind bars after being found guilty of misusing about $100,000 in city funds to help fund one of his Senate campaigns.”
Cuomo said, "Francisco Moya is a proven leader for Central Queens, while his opponent's actions have disqualified him from public service.”
As Cuomo expressed his support for Moya, he referenced the many achievements of the assemblyman, including the expansion of tenant protections, his record on schools, reforms to the criminal justice system as well as increasing the minimum wage.
Before the primaries that are scheduled for September 12, four different council candidates have been endorsed by the governor, all of which like Cuomo are from Queens.
Regarding the mayoral candidates however, Cuomo has been less vocal and has not revealed who he is endorsing. Since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014, he has had a rocky relationship with Governor Cuomo that has brought them back and forth again and again between being friends and rivals.
Moya has been given the full support of the Democratic establishment. Among his supporters are seven potential candidates for City Council speaker who have gone beyond merely endorsing Moya to saying that if Monserrate were elected they would not even accept his support in their speaker bids.
