A DAY IN THE MAJORS
Zumaya has another freak injury At least this one wasn’t a videogame. Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya threw a fastball Monday night in Minnesota and immediately felt “a loud and disgusting pop” as he collapsed in pain..
“It felt like my elbow exploded,” he said. “It was like someone took a hammer and shattered my elbow.”
An MRI exam Tuesday revealed a fractured right elbow, ending his season.
“I have never seen it on a one-pitch episode like that,” athletic trainer Kevin Rand said.
Zumaya missed parts of the last three seasons because of injuries to his shoulder, finger and wrist, which he hurt playing Guitar Hero.
“This is another injury, and it’s a freak one again,” he said. “I guess I’m just a freak.”
Joel Zumaya clutched his elbow walking off the field.
