It started with a fa­vor from a dis­tin­guished for­mer Kansas gover­nor. In 1950, Alf Lan­don gave a mal­func­tion­ing ra­dio trans­mit­ter to An­drew “Skip” Carter, who was in pur­suit of his dream to start a ra­dio sta­tion. Carter drove to Leavenworth, re­trieved the trans­mit­ter and hauled it back to Kansas City on a flatbed truck.
