Myanmar court upholds verdicts on journalists
A court in Myanmar rejected the appeal Friday of two Reuters journalists who were sentenced to seven years in prison for reporting on atrocities against the country’s Rohingya minority.
The journalists, U Wa Lone, 32, and U Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, were convicted in September of violating the Official Secrets act. The verdict dampened hopes that the civilian government would usher in an era of civil liberties in a country long controlled by the military.
“Today’s ruling is yet another injustice among many inflicted upon Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo,” said the editor-in-chief of Reuters, Stephen J. Adler.
