Mercury thermostats can be recycled

CENTREVILLE — Mercury thermostats can now be recycled at the Centreville Transfer Station because of a partnership with the Midshore Regional Recycling Program and Thermostat Recycling Corporation.

As many homeowners are switching to smart thermostats, it is important to provide homeowners an avenue to safely dispose of the older mercury-based models which can be toxic if you throw your thermostat in the garbage and the vial containing mercury breaks and leaks.

If recovered properly, mercury causes no environmental harm and can be recycled. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, and if it’s not handled right, pollutes our air and waterways.
