Grandma raising son’s children

The Kent Island Bay Times - - Front Page -

Charlotte considers her four grandchildren — Mia, Kendra, Camila and Mason — to be one of life’s greatest gifts.

She was there when each one was born and has been to nearly every school program and birthday party. She has seen their ups and downs and knows the joys and sorrows of each one. But now, she is faced with raising them.

Their mother is gone, and her son could not handle them on his own, so he brought them to live with her. Charlotte’s husband died years ago.

She works a full-time job, so she is not home during

the day. Ten-year-old Mia helps to look out for her little sisters and brother.

Charlotte is exhausted when she comes home at the end of the day, but she’s always happy to see their smiling faces and glad they are at her house and safe. She wants to try to give them everything they need.

With four more mouths to feed and the extra expenses, her paycheck is stretching thinner and thinner. Her son

is between jobs and not able to help.
