Galilee Com­mu­nity Gar­den seeks gar­den­ers, dona­tions

CH­ESTER — The Galilee Com­mu­nity Gar­den was formed in 2015 to meet the need for a com­mu­nity gar­den on Kent Is­land. The Queen Anne’s Coun­tyMaster Gar­den­ers, Galilee Lutheran Church and Har­bor View Com­mu­nity part­nered to meet this need on land owned by the church. To­day, 15 raised beds are avail­able to res­i­dents re­gard­less of age, color, sex, reli­gion, etc. If you want to be gar­dener, con­tact Larry Lorenz at 443534-2423.

Dur­ing its first three years, the Gar­den suc­cess­fully so­licited dona­tions of time, la­bor, ma­te­ri­als and money. Work­ing to­gether mem­bers:

• Built and planted four teach­ing gar­dens (herb, peren­nial, pol­li­na­tor and veg­etable);

• Built 15 raised-gar­den beds;

• Built a strong bridge over the drainage swale be­tween the park­ing lot and gar­den; and

• Spon­sored many gar­den-re­lated ed­u­ca­tional pro­grams on-site.

The Galilee Com­mu­nity Gar­den is “A Com­mu­nity Grow­ing To­gether.”

The Galilee Com­mu­nity Gar­den seeks dona­tions through If dona­tions to­tal $600 or more, the Gar­den will qual­ify for a $400 SeedMoney chal­lenge grant. The Gar­den will use the dona­tions and grants to buy con­struc­tion ma­te­ri­als for the Queen Anne’s County High School shop class to build a gar­den stor­age shed and for the gar­den to build a wheel­chair ac­ces­si­ble path and ac­ces­si­ble raised beds out of con­crete block.

Dona­tions to help grow the Galilee Com­mu­nity Gar­den can be made at: do­nate. A do­na­tion of any size is greatly ap­pre­ci­ated, mem­bers say.
