Bars, restaurants turn to carryout to comply with shutdown

- Mitch Hotts Hotts Spots

With the state-ordered shutdown of bars and restaurants over the COVID-19 crisis, area eateries are ramping up carryout options to keep folks fed.

There is a ban on inperson dining, but many places are offering curbside pickup service or delivery via Uber Eats or DoorDash.

In addition, venue owners suggest purchasing gift cards to provide an immediate cash infusion to keep their doors open in light of dwindling revenue.

“There’s a huge demand to bring fresh, healthy, nutritious food home to families,” said Chef Jim Opatt of Andiamo’s Warren location. “And we have curbside pickup, with little human-to-human contact, so you don’t have to even leave your car.”

A spokeswoman for Sterling Heights-based Jet’s Pizza said the company expects a spike in food orders this weekend. She also said they are in need of delivery drivers at all of its locations as many stores are shortstaffed due to employees self-quarantining.

“We are trying to urge anyone from the restaurant industry who may have lost their jobs, to come and apply at Jet’s at this time,” Jessica Vicari, the company’s marketing director, said in an email.
