Two Macomb Daily reporters win awards

Two multimedia journalist­s with The Macomb Daily and a page designer were among the winners announced in the 2019 Michigan Associated Press Media Editors Contest.

Macomb Daily multimedia journalist Norb Franz won a third place award in the Best Investigat­ive Reporting category for his investigat­ive piece “Free Healthcare for Life.”

The story detailed how the lame duck Warren city council voted themselves and their dependents free health insurance coverage and dental insurance for life.

Multimedia journalist Jameson Cook won a first prize award in the Best Spot News Photo category for a photograph he took of Darchelle Lattner, sister of Jim Lattner, embracing Kierra Johnson, the daughter of murder victim Julii Johnson after the final of three first degree murder verdicts were announced against Marcie Griffin, George Rider and Eric Gibson, in a courtroom gallery in Macomb County Circuit Court that was published June 7, 2019 online. The trio was convicted of the shooting death of Julii Johnson outside of her boyfriend’s condominiu­m in Warren in 2017.

Joseph Pas, a page designer, won a first prize award for Best Full Page Design for the work he did laying out the story “A Day Unlike Any Other” written by Norb Franz and Gina Joseph and Mark Cavitt, members of the MediaNews Group data team.

The story ran June 2 and covered D-Day, speaking to surviviors of that time and the history surroundin­g it.

Thirty-one daily newspapers submitted 850 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2019. The Associated Press is a not-for-profit news cooperativ­e representi­ng newspapers and broadcast stations in the United States.
