Sterling Heights residents who are looking to get outside during the stay-athome order will be pleased to know they can work on their yards.

The city of Sterling Heights will begin yard waste collection as scheduled on April 6.

“We’ve been in contact with our representatives at GFL, and we’re thrilled to report they are fully functioning despite the current COVID-19 crisis,” said Mike Moore, director of the city’s department of public works. “We are seeing no current delays in refuse collection throughout the City, and GFL stands ready to start additional yard waste collection on schedule as in previous years.”

Yard waste is collected every week on the same day as each resident’s refuse collection.

Residents can place yard waste at the curb in heavy duty brown paper yard waste bags or an approved container. Approved containers include 32-gallon cans, 64-gallon carts or 96-gallon carts marked “compost” with a yellow GFL sticker.

The stickers will be available, when City Hall reopens following the current COVID-19 closure, in the community relations department or DPW on 18 Mile Road in Sterling Heights.

Yard waste will not be picked up in clear, colored or black bags of any type.

Acceptable yard waste includes branches and brush less than four feet long, bundled and securely tied; flowers and other “soft” material; grass clippings and garden weeds and leaves. Sod is not accepted.
