UCS elementary school educator is Teacher of Year
Tuesday it was a new contract, and before that they were being recognized by their students and their peers, it has been a great couple of weeks for teachers.
Today’s spotlight is shining on Kathleen Muza.
The teacher at Schuchard Elementary was selected as Utica Community Schools Teacher of the Year by Superintendent Christine Johns and surprised to learn she would also receive a vehicle lease of her choice from The Suburban Collection.
Muza was offered the lease during a Zoom call with Johns and James Elder III, general manager of the Suburban Ford of Sterling Heights.
“Mrs. Muza exemplifies the excellence, leadership and service that embodies the culture of Utica Community Schools,” Johns said.
As the 2020 Teacher of the Year, Muza will select either a brand-new Ford Edge, Escape, Explorer, F150, Fiesta, Flex, Focus, Fusion, or Mustang. Depending on her choice, she will receive either a two or three-year lease compliments of The Suburban Collection.
“The teachers in our communities give so much of themselves to ensure their students — our children — can succeed and reach their full potential,” said David Fischer Jr., president and CEO of The Suburban Collection. “We feel so fortunate we can help recognize and show our gratitude to these extraordinary individuals who leave a lasting impact on the lives of their students.”
In a release, district officials stated Muza is a tireless leader with deep knowledge and passion for mathematics education. In 2010, she earned the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science one of the highest national honors for teachers of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Colleagues see her as a role model on how to be a successful teacher.
“It’s such an honor and I am so humbled to represent so many excellent teachers in Utica Community Schools,” Muza said.
Among those who approved of Johns’ choice was Schuchard sixth-grader Saranna Shamasha.
“Mrs. Muza challenges students to get us where we need to be. Whenever someone needs help, she provides it,” Shamasha said.
In addition to Teacher of the Year, Muza was also named the UCS Elementary Teacher of the Year. Other teachers honored this year include Megan Tyll, a Shelby Junior High School special services teacher, as Junior High Teacher of the Year, and Jeanette Mikula, a Utica High School special services teacher, as the High School Teacher of the Year.
