The number of people dying from COVID-19 took a noticeable decrease Sunday, with Macomb County reporting only one new fatality, while the city of Detroit had none.

Those are among the lowest numbers reported by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services since the outbreak of the highly contagious virus began in March. But officials say some information takes time to get recorded as records are reviewed and matched.

Michigan reported 11 new deaths and 638 new cases Sunday. That brings the state’s totals to 4,891 fatalities and 51,142 cases.

Macomb County reported 41 new reports of the infection, for a total of 6,345 cases. The single death brings the county’s death toll to 740.

Oakland County reported 20 new cases and two fatalities. Oakland now has 8,043 cases and 912 deaths.

In addition to having no deaths reported Sunday, the City of Detroit had 21 new cases. Detroit now has 10,348 cases and 1,255 fatalities.

For the rest of Wayne County, one new fatality was reported along with 28 new reports. There are now 8,717 cases and 958 fatalities reported in Wayne County.

Michigan’s overall fatality rate is 10%. The state ranks fourth in fatalities, behind New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, according to Johns Hopkins University. Michigan is seventh in the number of confirmed cases.

As of Saturday, 28,234 people are listed as recovered, including 3,827 individuals from Macomb County. Health officials define recoveries as confirmed COVID-19 cases who are 30 days out from the onset of their illness.

Johns Hopkins University reports there are 1,478,241 cases in the United States and 89,207 deaths. Globally, 313,973 people have lost their lives to the virus, and 4,687,320 cases.
