Mushroom hunter discovers remains
Body of 35-year-old man missing since 2018 found in woods
The remains of a missing Macomb County man were found by a mushroom hunter Saturday afternoon in a heavily wooded and swampy field in Chesterfield Township, according to police.
Investigators believe the remains, along with other items found in the area south of 23 Mile Road east of Interstate 94 were those of a 35-year-old Eastpointe man who has been missing for two years.
“The remains were only bones, heavily weathered clothing and camping equipment,” police Sgt. Ken Anderson said in a news release.
There are no signs of criminal activity or foul play, Anderson added.
A Chesterfield Township resident hunting for mushrooms made the discovery about 4 p.m. Saturday and immediately notified police.
When officers and detectives arrived, the mushroom hunter directed them to a remote are where they also found a wallet with a Michigan identification card.
The identification card had been issued to the Eastpointe individual, who was reported missing in July 2018. He apparently had been living in the field for quite some time, but authorities couldn’t say when he may have died.
Investigators were able to contact the man’s nextof-kin who resides in Texas.
An investigator from the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the items for further analysis. Police said after an initial examination, officials determined there were no signs of trauma.
Anderson said detectives will continue to investigate, but as of now, he does not suspect foul play was involved in the man’s death.
