Lakeview wins MAC White golf tourney

No need for a polygraph test. Lakeview girls’ golf coach Karen Mazzola and her players all agreed: They were shocked.

The Huskies, who had completed MAC White Division dual meet play with a .500 record, surprised plenty of people by winning the league meet played at Oak Ridge Friday.

Lakeview finished with 381 strokes, five fewer than Romeo, the regular-season champion. Stevenson, which finished second in the dual meet standings, was third at the White Division meet.

“I stepped on the bus after the meet and asked ‘ All right girls, is anyone else as shocked as I am?’ They all answered ‘ Coach, we are all just as surprised.’”

The Huskies were led by sophomore Ashley Lutomski, who shot an 89.Modest in oh ada 95. Senior Layne Kilroy carded a 97, sophomore Lily Waszak a 100, sophomore Carly DenBa as a 12 and sophomore Isabella Micakovic shot a 113.

“I had tears on my eyes as I was walking to the bus. I am just so proud of these girls,” said the Lakeview coach.

“I thought it was between Romeo and Stevenson. That would have been my bet. They were tied for first going into today’s meet. We were scheduled to play Maple Lane Thursday, but there was lightning just as the girls started to tee off. After that came hail and that’s when Dennis (Walczak) and I agreed we could not play and that the front nine holes at today’s league meet would count as our final dual meet,” said Mazzola.

DennisWalc­zak is the Stevenson coach.

Lakeview shot a 190 on the front nine, its best round all year. Stevenson came in at 193.

“It was cold today. I had three layers of clothes on. I passed out hand warmers on the bus,” said the Lakeview coach.

Modestino, Lutomski and Kilroy are often the top three golfers for the Huskies. Kilroy, the team’s sole senior, is a captain. Modestino, the only junior on the team, is the other captain.

TheHuskies will get ready for Thursday’s Division 2 regional

meet hosted by North Farmington at the Farmington Hills Golf Course. They are the only team fromMacomb County in the field.

The others are Avondale, Berkley, Groves, Mercy, Grosse Pointe North, Holly, North Farmington, PortHuron, Port Huron Northern, South LyonEast andWalled LakeWester­n.

GOLFREGION­ALS

Macomb County tournament champion Lutheran North is the host team for the Division 3 regional that will be at Heather Hills today.

Armada and Regina are also in the field with Bloom field Hills Sacred Heart, Cranbrook Kingswood, Goodrich, Imlay City, Marysville, Notre Dame Prep, Ortonville Brandon and St. Clair.

InDivision 1 onWednesda­y, Eisenhower is the host team at Cherry Creek.

Dakota, Ford, Fraser, L’Anse Creuse, L’Anse

Creuse North, Rochester, Romeo, Stevenson, Stoney Creek, Troy Athens and Utica are also in the field.

CROSS COUNTRY

Romeo will take No. 1 rankings into Macomb County championsh­ip meets this week.

The Bulldogs are No. 1 in the state Division 1 boys ranking byMichigan­CrossCount­ry.com. Romeo’s girls team is No. 8 in Division 1.

The Bulldogs’ boys and girls are No. 1 in their respective county rankings compiled by Glenn Craze.

Romeo is followed by Utica, Dakota, De La Salle Collegiate and Cousino to complete the top five in the boys ranking.

In the girls, Romeo is followed by Dakota, Utica, Regina and Eisenhower in the top five.

County meets are Friday for boys and Saturday for girls at Freedom Hill.

The meets are being run on consecutiv­e days and staged in heats both days to meet Michiga nHigh School Athletic Associatio­n guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Romeo is the defending champion for boys and girls.

FOOTBALL

Division co-leadersmee­t Friday in four MAC games.

In the White, WarrenMott (2- 0) plays host to Utica (2-0).

In the Blue, Port Huron Northern (2- 0) plays Port Huron (3-0).

In the Gold, Roseville is at Eastpointe in amatch-up of 3-0 teams.

In the Bronze, Lamphere is at South Lake. Both are 3-0.
