Wise Guy makes his latest game day picks

-

The Wise Guy and my wife, Gayle Guy, have a new dog.

Yep, another Yorkshire Terrier. Those are the dogs about the size of a healthy rat in bad need of a trip to the barber.

We’ve had Yorkies before. They usually weigh somewhere between five and six pounds.

This guy has to be a runt. Born in January, he still is stepping on the scales at slightly over two pounds.

Can you imagine that? He’s so small that squirrels trash talk him in the backyard..

We bought the smallest harness we could find and still had to cut it in two and sew it together.

I am a dog lover, but there is something embarrassing about walking one who weighs less than my weight gain after a slice of cheesecake.

I have always indulged my wife’s love of Yorkies because she has allowed me to bring in more substantial dogs to the house. You know, mutts that go upwards of 90 pounds.

This latest Yorkie’s name is Bandit. Just to regain some semblance of manhood, the Wise Guy is about to go out and get a Mastiff. Bandit, meet Bruno. It is time to get some payback from those squirrels.

Doggone it, let’s see what is happening this week, the last week of the regular season. There are some unique matchups.

TRAVERSE CITY CENTRAL AT DAKOTA

Apparently, they do a lotmore in Traverse City than grow cherries. Here’s the bottom line: The brand of high school football the Trojans play ain’t exactly the pits.

Did you know that TC Central will be coming into the game with an undefeated record. Not only are the Trojans winning, but their dominance week after week might offend some potential tourists.

Check out these scores: 53-13 over Traverse City West; 49-20 over Alpena; 41-17 over Cadillac; 57-0 over Alpena and 60-7 in last week’s game against Gaylord.

Those are some mighty impressive scores.

Then again, TC Central was not playing against the likes of De’Javion Stepney and Caiden Sloan, both stars on a powerful Dakota team.

Still, theWise Guy is going with the team from up north. I just figure there might be a box of chocolate covered cherries on the pillow at the Holiday Inn Express in Traverse City waiting for me (blatant plea for bribery!)

ROMEO ATWALLED LAKE NORTHERN

Close but no cigar.

Who said that first, Jack Benny or Curt Rienas, the Romeo coach?

Not to infer that the coach is a smoker, but all but one time when his Bulldogs were RGDone playing a game, they have come up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Romeo will take a 1-4 record into the game. All but one

of those MAC Red defeats have been close. The losses have come against Grosse Pointe North 24-14, Chippewa Valley 37-17, Stevenson 14-7 and Dakota 24-18. The Bulldogs’ sole win was 17-13 over Ike.

The hostWLN Knights have won just onemore time than Romeo.

That is the way it will stay heading into the playoffs for the host team. Romeo takes a 2-3 mark into the playoffs.

MARTIN LUTHER KING AT CHIPPEWA VALLEY

How crazy is this 2020 COVID-19 campaign?

Chippewa Valley, a team that won a state championship just two seasons ago, heads into this game with a 2-3 record.

And ML King, which has won a state crown three times since 2015, is just 3-2.

Programs put up on blocks. Programs restarted like a Ford Fiesta with a bum battery.

Ups and downs. Ups and downs. Cedar Point should sponsor high school athletics this entire year.

Up and down comes the coin. How do you pick between these two proud programs? The Wise Guy sides with the squad from the Public School League in Detroit.

CLINTONDALE AT GROSSE ILE

The Wise Guy has been to Grosse Ile exactly twice in his life.

The first time was when I was in college getting my PhD in Seer-ology. I was a seer-ious student. Seer-iously.

The second time was a year ago when my wife, Gayle Guy, insisted we make the drive downriver..

Both times I left impressed. It seemed like one of the Grosse Pointes with a lower tax bracket. And I mean that in a positive way.

Clintondale coach Dave Schindler scheduled this game so his players could have some fun on the island.

They might not have time to visit the Grosse

Ile Yacht Club, but winning is always enjoyable.

Ship ahoy, Dragons! Bring a victory back to Macomb County please.

UNIVERSITY OF DETROIT JESUIT AT WARREN WOODSTOWER

One team is from the MAC Gold Division.

The return address of the other is the Catholic League’s AA Division.

And during most seasons, never the twain shall meet.

But 2020 hardly qualifies as “most seasons.” The ongoing pandemic made sure of that.

Everybody gets into the playoffs. Plenty of

teams were finished with league play last week, so that is what brings this rare matchup to us. It is the final week of the regular season.

True confession time. The Wise Guy isn’t always that wise.

So this one is purely a guess. Give me the UD Cubs.

In other games this week: Ford loses at Stevenson; Eisenhower prevails at Anchor Bay; Denby falls at WarrenMott; Utica upends visiting Sterling Heights; Lakeview gets a win at Lake Shore; L’Anse Creuse North stumbles at L’Anse Creuse; Fraser gets a road win at Royal Oak; Roseville knocks off Port Huron; Grosse Pointe South downs Grosse Pointe North; Port Huron Northern wins at Cousino; Marysville succeeds at St.

Clair; Marine City trips at Notre Dame Prep; Bishop Foley bumps off visiting Madison; Eastpointe gets a win at Center Line; South Lake beats visiting Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard; Fitzgerald chalks up a victory at Lincoln; University Liggett downs host New Haven; Richmond wins on the road at Algonac; North Branch triumphs at Armada; De La Salle loses at Cass Tech; Parkway Christian stumbles at Advanced Tech; Michigan Collegiate schools host Summit Academy and Lutheran North downs visiting Dearborn Heights Robichaud.
