City to welcome 2021 with a bang

-

Downtown Mount Clemens has two fireworks displays scheduled for New Year’s Eve to welcome in 2021.

There’s a 9 p.m. Thursday display for families and a midnight show for traditionalists who — gladly — will say goodbye to 2020 and hello to the New Year.

The fireworks will be launched from the municipal parking lot next to City Hall on the east side of the Clinton Riverfront. If you’re not a homeowner in that part of town, there are numerous spots for viewing.

There will be free parking available within blocks of the display.

Those who plan to go to watch the fireworks are asked to stay in their vehicles, or if they choose to walk around downtown, wear a mask and keep socially distant.

It won’t be the normal street party that residents have come to know from years past as COVID-19 restrictions prevent gatherings.

For 28 years, the Macomb County New Year’s Eve Gala has taken place in the city’s downtown with an evening of music, food, and fireworks. But because of the pandemic, organizers had to put on their thinking caps to develop a similar event that can be operated safely.

Michelle Weiss of the Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority said this will be a no-frills event. There will not be a ball drop or celebrations at any of the city’s bars and restaurants, no children’s events or live bands. It’s just a chance to safely enjoy the fireworks.

“We have got to do something to give people hope,” she said.

The Macomb County New Year’s Fireworks takes place in the heart of downtown Mount Clemens, directly across from the Macomb County Circuit Court building. From there, the best viewing spots will be along the west bank of the Clinton River or between N. Main Street between New Street and Market Street.

The weather is expected to cooperate. The National Weather Service says expect cloudy conditions with a low around 26.
