Michigan neared the two million mark in vaccines administered against the deadly coronavirus Tuesday, and new cases and deaths continued a gradual downward trend.

Through Monday, health providers had given 1,942,759 shots of the vaccine, or roughly 20% of the state’s total population. The state’s goal is to vaccinate 70% of the population age 16 and older.

Vaccination numbers continue to rise in southeast Michigan, which has seen the majority of virus cases and deaths since the pandemic began nearly a year ago.

There has been 261,841 shots given in Oakland

County, 148,684 in Macomb County, 201,184 in Wayne County, and 62,698 in Detroit.

New cases and deaths announced Tuesday showed an increase over Monday’s numbers but the overall trend has been downward since December.

Statewide, there were 1,316 new cases and 34 deaths Tuesday, including 160 cases and three deaths in Oakland County, 130 cases and five deaths in Macomb County, 131 cases and one death in Wayne County, and 76 cases and four deaths in Detroit.

Elsewhere in the state, there were 14 cases and two deaths in Calhoun County, 105 cases and no deaths in Kent County, and 23 cases and seven deaths in Saginaw County.

In three mid-Michigan counties, there were no deaths but three cases in Isabella County, three cases in Clare County, and four cases in Gratiot County.

In all, the state has experienced 582,719 confirmed cases of the virus and 15,396 deaths since counting began last March at the start of the pandemic.
