CHIPPEWA VALLEY 14, L’ANSE CREUSE NORTH 11

Chippewa Valley’s Michael Gutmann was five minutes late to the field the Big Reds’ season opener.

He made up for it big time in the MAC crossover contest against L’Anse Creuse North.

The senior attackman scored 10 goals in helping CV defeat L’Anse Creuse North in the opener for both teams.

“It was a great feeling just to out there and play again,” said Gutmann, who like every other student-athlete had his spring sports season canceled by COVID-19 last year.

The 10-goal outburst doubled his previous career high for the program that’s just in its second year of existence.

“I just felt good, after waking up late,” Gutmann laughed. “Maybe I’ll just need to keep doing that.”

“I tell them to here an hour before the game because I know how kids are,” Big Reds coach Daniel Lawrence said. “I’m not mad at him.

“He’s one of three seniors on the team so I’m very happy for him,” Lawrence added. “He played well as a sophomore. This is just so awesome for him. He’s a leader out there and an unselfish guy. He plays for his team and I love that.”

CV had just two wins in their first season two years ago.

“I knew we were going to have something special this year,” Lawrence said. “They didn’t know anything but defeat that first year until we faced some teams we were equal with. This is just such a great way to start the season.

Joey Bretz scored three goals and Shaun Zatelli had one for the Big Reds. Will Kummerl made 11 saves.

LCN got three goals apiece from Luke Smith and Ashton Cetnar. Kenny Michie added two goals, while Toby Vergara, Colin Barrett, and Curtis Pleiness each had one. Cory Vanhee made nine saves.
