Home invasion suspect, accomplice arrested in Detroit
A suspect in a recent Warren home invasion and burglary was arrested in Detroit on Monday along with an accomplice.
Trevor Louis Shanks and Julie Ann Charbeneau, both 31, were arrested without incident and a search of Shanks’ hotel room and vehicle turned up stolen jewelry, crack cocaine and clothing that matched those worn in the home invasion.
The April 9 home invasion in the 29000 block of Flanders Avenue was captured on home surveillance video from inside the home, which was posted on several Facebook pages, as well as by a neighbor’s outdoor surveillance system. The rear door of the home was kicked in and the victim’s bedroom was ransacked and a large quantity of heirloom jewelry was stolen.
Reports from the victim’s family on Facebook said the incident took place between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Friday afternoon. The victim told police the jewelry had belonged to her late husband and her mother and was of great sentimental value.
Warren Police Department evidence technicians were able to retrieve a palm print from a window the suspect was seen touching on video and it was linked to Shank. A portion of the stolen jewelry was located at a Detroit pawn shop on Monday where it had been pawned by Charbeneau and Shanks for $2,200. Shanks and Charbeneau were located by members of the Warren Special Investigations Division with assistance from a Warren Intelligence Officer. Based on collected evidence, Detective James Schwab believes Shanks may be a suspect in strong arm robberies in Eastpointe, Dearborn, Taylor and Melvindale.
Information has been forwarded to those police departments for investigation and possible additional charges. Shanks is charged with second degree home invasion, which is a 15 year felony; receiving and concealing stolen property and conspiracy to commit receiving and concealing stolen property, which are each five year felonies; and two counts of possession of cocaine, a four year felony. Charbeneau is charged with receiving and concealing stolen property; conspiracy to commit receiving and concealing stolen property; and possession of cocaine.
Both suspects were arraigned before Judge Matthew Sabaugh in 37th District Court on April 14 with a cash bond for Shanks set at $500,000 and for Charbeneau, $50,000. Probable cause hearings for both suspects are scheduled for April 22.
