Threat locks down Dakota High School
Dakota High School in Macomb Township was placed on lockdown for a short time Monday afternoon, but the enforcement was later lifted when authorities determined the threat wasn’t credible.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that sheriff’s dispatchers received a threat call at 1:26 p.m. The nature of it wasn’t released.
“The school was placed on temporary lockdown and cleared by sheriff’s personnel without incident,” the sheriff’s office said. “It was eventually re-opened. We do not believe this to be a credible threat at this time, but are continuing to investigate.”
Sgt. Renee Yax of the sheriff’s office said she could not comment further aside from the statement.
Chippewa Valley Schools spokesperson Diane Blain said an email was sent out to Dakota parents later in the day to explain the police presence at the school, on 21 Mile Road, east of Heydenreich Road.
Blain said the caller reported a shooting at a residence but gave the address of the high school. She said investigators are trying to determine who may have placed the call.
“The caller said they were in a home and were shot but gave the dispatcher the address of Dakota High School. Upon receiving this news, we immediately put our building in a lock down and police worked with us to check each classroom to make sure everything was fine,” the letter read.
The letter went on to state Chippewa Valley Schools official appreciate the “quick, professional” response of deputies working on the case.
“At no time during this event were any of our students in harm’s way. The Sheriff’s Department will continue to investigate the origins of this call. We ask that anyone who may have additional information regarding this call to contact law enforcement,” the letter stated.
Some students could have experienced a delay in the bus ride home, officials said.
