The daily average number of new Michigan coronavirus cases fell off a little compared to last week but still remain troublingly high.

The state health department announced 8,574 new cases Monday and 61 additional deaths for the twoday weekend, bringing the state’s total to 793,881 cases and 16,901 deaths since the pandemic began in Michigan more than a year ago.

Southeast Michigan accounted for 42.88% of the new cases over the weekend and 31.14% of the deaths.

There were 1,145 new cases and six deaths in Macomb County, 1,002 cases and seven deaths in Wayne County, 855 cases and four deaths in Oakland County, and 675 cases and two deaths in Detroit.

Other areas of the state also showed relatively high numbers. There were 718 cases and one death in Kent County, 363 cases and three deaths in Genesee County, 309 cases and two deaths in Ottawa County, 202 cases and one death in Ingham County, and 184 cases and one death in Livingston County.

Just two of Michigan’s 83 counties had no new cases or deaths over the weekend.

In all, health providers around the state have completely vaccinated 30.8% of residents age 16 and older, or 2,496,477 people. Vaccine coverage, meaning the first of two doses of the twoshot vaccine, has begun in 45.2% of the estimated 8,096,917 residents age 16 and older.

The state’s goal is to completely vaccinate 70% of that population.
