Cutting-edge jet belongs here
As Chairman of the Macomb County Commission, I’m proud to represent Michigan’s legacy of ingenuity and industry.
Michiganders have played the leading role in producing every technological advancement in the modern age whether it be automobiles for the public or military technology to protect our troops. That’s why it’s so important that the F-35 Lightning II Fighter Jet be produced and stationed in Michigan.
This fifth-generation fighter jet represents security for America and our allies while also supporting more than 5,000 jobs and more than $500 million in economic impact in Michigan. The opportunities for the aircraft in Michigan do not stop there.
If so many parts of the F-35 can be built in Michigan, it should be stationed here. Selfridge is home of the 127th
Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard, and hosts units of the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps reserves. Given the heightened role the National Guard and Reserve units are playing in our nation’s defense, those in uniform should be training on the most up-to-date technology and aircraft. In addition, the surrounding community would stand to benefit from continued investment in the base.
The F-35 is the world’s most sophisticated weapons system. Such advanced technology relies on a diverse and robust supply chain. More than 1,800 suppliers in 48 states and Puerto Rico are contributing to the success of the F-35, and I am proud to note that nearly 50 of those suppliers are in Michigan. The F-35 represents the type of design, creativity and manufacturing skill that are the hallmarks of American industry and the Michigan way of life.
The F-35 program also reflects solid business practices. It has brought down the overall price per jet to below $80 million. By comparison, legacy, older-generation fighter jets, like the F-15, are costing more per plane with significantly less capability. We should be investing in our future and ensuring that Michigan plays a significant role in producing tomorrow’s products.
The F-35 needs to be front and center in our national defense strategy because it is keeping America safe and delivering good jobs to Michigan as we recover from the economic havoc of COVID-19. Congress needs to take a bipartisan approach to the program and continue funding at adequate levels.
