A 29-year-old Clinton Township man faces at least seven years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing a Hamtramck pharmacy of nearly 4,000 opioid pills and intending to sell other opioids.

Marcus McBride is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 14 by U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith after pleading guilty last month to robbery, possession with intent to sell controlled substances and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence for the 2020 incident.

The firearm offense carries a mandatory term of seven years in prison, a term that will be stacked upon any sentences he receives for the other charges. The robbery charge is punishable by up to 25 years in prison while the drug charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

As part of the plea deal, U.S. attorneys agreed not to seek a sentencing enhancement due to a prior conviction and for one count to be dismissed.

Federal prosecutors also will not seek up to $1.5 million in fines that could be assessed.

McBride entered the Hoover Pharmacy on Holbrook Avenue on June 10, 2020, waving a firearm and yelling “Get down.” He approached the counter, pointed the handgun at the pharmacist while stretching his arm across the counter and through a window, and said, “Give me 30’s and 40’s,” in reference to 30 milligram and 40 milligram “preparations of oxycodone,” U.S. attorneys said court documents.

“The pharmacist grabbed a box of medication which contained Oxycodone and Oxymorphone prescriptions and handed it to the suspect,” U.S. attorneys said.

McBride fled with the drugs. The incident was captured on video, and McBride’s cell phone showed he was in the area at the time.

Four months prior to that, Feb. 11, McBride was arrested on drug charges after exiting a parked vehicle at the Greyhound bus station in Detroit, according to federal officials.

He exited the vehicle and walked away after apparently noticing law-enforcement officers.

He was detained, and officers found two baggies that he dropped near the vehicle: one bag contained 330 pills of oxycodone and the second bag contained fentanyl, officials said.

McBride at the time was on state parole for two second-degree home invasion charges and one carrying a concealed weapon charge in Wayne County for 2012 incidents and was served about seven years of a 3-15 year terms, according to prison records.

Hamtramck police worked with federal authorities on the case.
