Family dispute leaves at least one person dead in head-on crash, shooting

A family dispute on Thanksgivi­ng resulted in a shooting and a horrific three-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 in Roseville that killed at least person, according to police.

The shooting took place at the Meadows apartment complex and escalated into a fatal crash that closed all lanes of eastbound I-94. The freeway was expected to be closed for several hours Thursday night as police conducted their investigat­ion.

Roseville police said some sort family trouble incident was reported about 4 p.m. on Nardelli Lane at the Meadows. The suspect in that incident got into a vehicle and entered the freeway in the Little Mack Avenue exit lane of I-94 where he faced oncoming traffic.

“It was reported that this individual was driving against traffic on the expressway causing a head-on collision,” Police Chief Ryan Monroe said in a media update.

According to police, officers were called to the apartment complex, in the area of Masonic Boulevard east of I-94, to investigat­e a report of shots fired during a family squabble.

The suspected shooter sped away from the scene and entered the wrong way of I-94, according to police.

After numerous motorists were able to avoid striking his vehicle, several others couldn’t avoid crashing into his vehicle. The police chief several people were seriously injured in the collisions.

No further informatio­n on either crime scene was immediatel­y available.

Neighbors said they heard several loud sounds coming from I-94 and looked outside to see the wreckage from the crashes. Witnesses said motorists were jammed up on the freeway as they tried to drive around the crashed vehicles.

A blue sedan, a white van, and an SUV were involved.

Residents said the white van had numerous children in it. None appeared to be injured.

“The van had what appeared to be between seven and nine kids, ranging from an infant to 12 or 14 years old, and they all came out and sat on the lawn,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified. “A bunch of neighbors rushed out here with blankets to try to keep the children warm.”

Residents said a young man, who appeared to be about 24 or 25, had an infant in his arms. The child was taken away by an ambulance, but it wasn’t know if that was as a precaution or because the infant suffered an injury. Also in the van was a kennel with two dogs inside.

Michigan State Police said all lanes of eastbound I-94 were diverted off the freeway. State Police will be assisting investigat­ors with a crash reconstruc­tionist.

In the meantime, a Macomb County Crime Scene Unit responded to the Meadows scene. A deputy was seen going into and exiting at least three units collecting evidence.

Police said the dual investigat­ions are continuing.
