For several years, Phillip Shia has been helping people who struggle with mobility get walk-in tubs installed in their homes while also helping families get insurance claims filed. Through his work, he started to notice that many people often needed more assistance, more than he had the ability to provide. So, when the opportunity to own a Mobility Plus store came up, he was thrilled to open a new shop in Shelby Township.

“For me, it’s about changing people’s lives,” he said. “I want to provide everything when it comes to mobility for people. I like seeing the look on their faces when they realize that I can help make things a little easier for them.”

Mobility typically becomes an issue as people age. Physical impairments caused by hip fractures or strokes and health conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis and diabetes can make it challenging for seniors to move freely. Studies show that more than 30% of people age 70 and older and an increasing number of those older than age 85 struggle with movement.

Mobility is important because it can decrease physical activity and healthy habits. Furthermore, it can cause people to withdraw from activities they previously enjoyed, perhaps causing them to experience social isolation.

Since opening in October, Mobility Plus has received a warm welcome from the community and customers. Phil grew up in the area, so he is pleased to serve his friends and neighbors. He has years of experience in providing

mobility equipment. Customers have come to rely on his attentive service and ability to find just the right equipment for their unique needs.

Phil pointed out that mobility impacts more than just the elderly. Those recovering from surgery, short-term illness or physical injury may also need temporary assistance to help them through this chapter in their story.

He aims to please, with a variety of products, services and equipment to help. Knee scooters, for example, are often in high demand for those recovering from a broken or fractured bone. However,

they can be difficult to find and not every scooter is the right fit. Mobility Plus in Shelby Township offers several types of scooters, including those sized for all body types, heights and abilities. One type of scooter, for example, is designed for active people, so it can handle more rugged use than a typical scooter that will be used indoors or on smooth surfaces like pavement.

“This can make a big difference between using the equipment and being comfortable while using the equipment,” he said.

Phil’s passion for helping customers is a testament to his commitment

to his high level of care.

“I feel like life led me down this path,” he said.

Increased mobility is essential to staying active and healthy. It allows people to remain independent longer because they may be able to get to the grocery store on their own or stay in the two-story home they have lived in for decades.

Renting the proper equipment may also make it easier to recover from a temporary medical need, such as having a hospital bed brought in on the first floor of their home. Often people aren’t familiar with items that may be available to them until Phil and the staff at Mobility Plus in Shelby Township help evaluate their needs.

Phil said being from the area, he knew that people were traveling to Oakland County and the Detroit area for necessary mobility equipment. Demand is expected to continue to rise for these products as Baby Boomers age and health insurance companies seek to lower the cost of care by having patients recover at home. This makes Mobility Plus in Shelby Township well positioned to meet the continuing needs of the community.

Phil’s store is the newest in the Mobility Plus franchise, which has more than 60 locations open nationwide. They deliver, install and service what they sell and provide instructions on using the equipment they rent. Customers are welcome to visit the showroom to view, touch and try all the equipment before making a purchase. The store offers a variety of lift chairs, power chairs, stair lifts, mobility scooter lifts, ramps and mobility accessories from the most reputable and trusted manufacturers in the industry.

Mobility Plus in Shelby Township even offers mobility tune-ups for wheelchairs, walkers and scooters, which involves tightening all the screws, oiling the joints and cleaning and sanitizing the unit and offers diagnostic tests if equipment isn’t working correctly. They will check batteries for free and install and properly dispose of old batteries if new ones are purchased through the store.
