Family holiday dispute ends in shots, arrests

- By Mitch Hotts

A 35-year-old man is expected to charged today with attempted murder in connection with a nonfatal shooting that stemmed from a Thanksgiving night family squabble, according to Warren police.

A 28-year-old female had been in a daylong disagreement with two of her sisters over how her mother was being treated for the holiday. Eventually, she and her boyfriend, the suspected shooter, pulled up in their vehicle to another vehicle where one of the sisters was a passenger in.

According to police, the couple rolled down the window of their car and the boyfriend shot into the other vehicle, police said. The shots hit a male in the car in the knee, hand and thigh, said Police Commissioner William Dwyer.

“None of the shots hit the woman in the car,” Dwyer said. “We believe she was his intended target.”

The incident took place about 12:30 a.m. Friday when officers were called to the 28000 block of Flanders Avenue, but police discovered the victim had driven to the area of 12 Mile and Schoenherr roads.

Investigators learned the domestic dispute began earlier on Churchill Drive in Sterling Heights Police said family members were upset over how one of the three daughters had treated their mother.

Police were called and interviewed the sister accused of mistreating her mother and her boyfriend. No action was taken.

A while later, the argument continued at multiple locations before it spilled over to Flanders in Warren. That’s where the accused sister and her boyfriend were “going to resolve their dispute” with the other two sisters and a male, Dwyer said.

A male and one of the sisters pulled up in a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis, while another sister and the suspected shooter arrived in a Dodge Charger.

According to police, as the two cars faced opposite directions, the couple rolled down the window of their car and the boyfriend shot four times into the Mercury, police said.

The car carrying the suspected shooter fled while the victim was transported to Ascension Hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds.

Police later found and impounded the Dodge Challenger. The male was arrested and charged with attempted murder, while the female was arrested for being an accessory after the fact.

Both are being held at the Macomb County Jail in Mount Clemens pending their arraignments today.

That was the second holiday incident Macomb County that was tied to Thanksgiving violence.

Earlier Thursday, a man had a dispute at the Meadows apartment complex in Roseville. He got into his car and headed in the wrong direction on Interstate 94, where he plowed head-on into another car.

At least one person died in the crash, according to Roseville police.
