Columbus ‘drama’ is unwarranted

-

Regarding the Clinton Township Columbus Day drama. Perhaps a little history lesson is in order. Columbus sailed on behalf of Spain, not Italy. For the politicians of Italian descent to line up and whine about this is a waste of taxpayers time and money. One of them said “a slap in the face to Italians.” Funny, I was under the impression we were all Americans of various descent. If we want to talk about a real slap in the face we can thank Christopher Columbus and his fellow explorers for introducing new disease, sickness and death to the indigenous people of North America who were otherwise healthy from these maladies. if Clinton Township is 20% Italian then what about the other 80% of us who live here? Ethnocentric behavior often excludes others and favors people of a particular descent. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States, not to the country of my heritage. At least that’s how it’s supposed to be.
