Goldendoodle the newest Macomb Bike staff member
Customers visiting Macomb Bike in Warren may notice a new four-legged, furry employee on the sales floor.
Sloane is store owner Jeff Radke’s 3-month-old Goldendoogle and has been officially “hired” as the new shop dog.
“We have not had a shop dog since 2020 when our Cujo, who was a Pug, passed away,” said Radke. “For a long time I could not even talk about Cujo without crying, but I just felt like I was ready for a new dog and so was the store.”
Cujo came to work at Macomb Bike in 2008, the same year Radke was hired. Radke didn’t want to leave the pup home alone and brought him to the store where he soon became a fixture.
“We have an employee who is a senior in high school and he brought in a picture of himself when he was about eight years old playing here with Cujo,” said Radke.
Being an avid cyclist, Radke had made a special dog carrier from a milk crate for Cujo that enabled the two to go on long rides together.
These days, there are many more sophisticated options for dog owners and Radke is considering a bike trailer for Sloane.
“I think this is her fourth day working at the store,” said Radke on Tuesday. “She’s getting used to everybody and I think our customers will enjoy visiting with her.
“The first day she came she was attached right to me but she is already getting more comfortable with everyone.”
A water and food bowl are set up in the back workshop of the store and there is a small jar of peanut butter reserved especially for Sloane.
Sloane would like Macomb Bike customers to know that head scratches are appreciated as are dog treats.
Macomb Bike is located on Schoenherr Road south of 12 Mile Road.
