It’s Port Huron’s outright championship to win.

Sophomore guard Garrett James scored 20 points Friday night to lead the host Big Reds to a 5642 victory over Lakeview in a match-up of two of the three teams that were tied for first place in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division basketball race.

Conner Rosenau added 16 points as Port Huron completed a season sweep of the Huskies and took sole possession of first place while clinching at least a tie for the title.

The Big Reds are 7-2. Lakeview and St. Clair are 6-3. The Saints lost to Madison 58-46 to fall out of the first-place tie.

Port Huron last won a league championship in 2004.

“That was before any of us were born,” said Rosenau, a 6-foot-4 senior forward. “This season that’s been our goal. We started off rough, started 1-4. Now we’re 8-2 in our last 10. It’s been incredible. I love all these guys.”

James made a 3-point basket and added a pair of 2-point baskets during a 7-1 run that gave Port Huron a 49-41 lead early in the fourth quarter.

“Sometimes I get like that — it feels like everything is going in,” James said. “We were fired up to play this game. We really wanted this one tonight.”

In division finales Tuesday, Port Huron plays Marine City, Lakeview plays Madison and St. Clair plays Marysville.

Matthew Ritter scored 24 points for Lakeview.

The Huskies managed only three points in the fourth quarter and were outscored 29-10 in the second half.

“Port Huron played hard, and they deserved to win the league championship,” Lakeview coach John Carr said. “We had our opportunities. We missed a lot of easy bunnies in key situations.”

Down 32-27 at halftime, Port Huron started the third quarter on an 11-5 run and took a 38-37 lead on James’ 3-pointer. Roesnau preceded the triple with four free throws.

After trailing 28-16 a dozen minutes into the game, Port Huron outscored the Huskies 9-3 in the final 2:59 of the second quarter and Lakeview settled for a 32-27 halftime lead.

Ritter ignited Lakeview in the first quarter. His triple with 29 seconds left ended the scoring and put Lakeview ahead 20-16. He also had baskets that gave the Huskies leads of 11-10 and 15-13.
