Cheer tourney starts with districts this weekend

Richmond begins defense of its state Division 3 competitiv­e cheer championsh­ip on Saturday.

The Blue Devils will be part of the field at the district tournament at Croswell-Lexington. Competitio­n begins at 2 p.m.

Joining Richmond, which has won the last four state championsh­ips, will be Armada, Lutheran North, Algonac, the host Pioneers, Detroit Country Day, Chandler Park, Lamphere, Marine City, Notre Dame Prep, St. Clair and Yale.

The top four teams advance to regional action next week.

The largest contingent of Macomb County teams will be at the Division 1 district at Stevenson on Friday. Competitio­n begins at 5 p.m. for the field that includes Macomb Area Conference Red Division champion Dakota.

Other teams competing will be the host Titans, Chippewa Valley, Fraser, L’Anse Creuse, L’Anse Creuse North, Lakeview, Warren-Mott, Dearborn, Detroit Cass Tech, Grosse Pointe South, Harper Woods and Lincoln Park.

MAC White champion Utica will be at the Troy Athens district that starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Joining the Chieftains and host Athens will be Eisenhower, Ford, Mercy, Rochester, defending state champion Rochester Adams, Stoney Creek, Royal Oak, Southfield A&T, Troy and West Bloomfield.

Anchor Bay and Romeo were assigned to the Lake Orion district that starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. The

host Dragons, Clarkston, Davison, Flushing, Grand Blanc, Lapeer, Midland Dow, Oxford, Saginaw Heritage and Walled Lake North will also compete.

In Division 2, Cousino, Lake Shore, Roseville and MAC Gold champion Warren Woods-Tower will be at the district at Allen Park, the defending state champion. Others competing will be Divine Child, Detroit King, Grosse Pointe North, Melvindale and Oak Park.

In Division 4, Center Line Prep will be at Adrian Madison for a 6 p.m. Friday start. Blissfield, Clawson, Hudson, Bishop Foley, Ottawa Lake Whiteford, Sand Creek, Southfield Christian and Whitmore Lake will also vie for berths in next week’s regional round.

At Merrill, Memphis, Merritt and New Haven will be at the tournament

that starts at 3 p.m. Saturday. Capac, Chesaning, Leslie, Montrose, Ovid-Elsie, Perry, Sandusky, Springport, St. Charles, Vassar and Webbervill­e round out the field.

Boys basketball

BISHOP FOLEY 61, WARREN-MOTT 58

Warren-Mott’s Kylan Garwood had 21 points and six rebounds and Braeden White had 11 points and seven rebounds in the non-league game. Wes Gilmore added eight points and Siere Keith-Boyer five.

CAPAC 60, ALMONT 50

Gaden Muxlow made 20 of 22 free throws and four 3-point goals while scoring 40 points to lead Brown City to the non-league victory.

ROMEO 52, STEVENSON 45

Tim Kewley had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Manny Towne scored 15 points to lead Romeo. Aiden Kamego and Jake Watson added eight points apiece. Stevenson’s Joe Malak had 13 points and seven rebounds and Victor Campbell scored 12 points. Romeo hosts New Haven in a MAC Red/White tournament opener Thursday.

MEMPHIS 78, BURTON CENTERPOIN­T CHRISTIAN 52

Cody Rembowski had 19 points and nine rebounds and Donovan Schuster, Evan Suess and Chase O’Connor scored 12 points apiece to lead Memphis. The Yellowjack­ets led 34-28 at halftime.
