Chesterfield Township Library

• Online learning tools for young children up to adult learners are available with a free library card at chelibrary.org. Residents may also apply for a free card at the website.

• Online streaming and download services are also available at chelibrary.org, including Hoopla, Libby by OverDrive and cloudLibrary for e-books and audiobooks, TV shows, music and more.

Clinton-Macomb Public Library

• The Main Library will host an event on climate change and land resources at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22. Gerald Hasspacher from the Sierra Club will present a program that explores how increasing temperatures and decreasing water resources impact the ability of the land to produce sustenance for humans and animals. • Teens in grades 6-12 will learn how to make different variations of popcorn at the South Branch at 4 p.m. Feb. 25. Classic popcorn, kettle corn, caramel corn, unicorn corn, and monster corn will all be demonstrated. To register, call 586-226-5073 or online.

• Maple Sugaring at 11 a.m. March 4 at the South Branch. The team at Dinosaur Hill will teach children how maple syrup is made. Event is recommended for families with preschoolers. To register, call 586-226-5073.

• CMPL is again hosting a poetry contest for children, teens and adults now through March 31. Participants must write a poem about nature or trees. Each line of the poem should be 40 characters or less and the poem must fit on a legal-sized sheet of paper. Entries are due on or before March 31. • CMPL is again offering the 1-2-3 program combining one topic, two communities and three age appropriate books that discuss a particular topic. This year is climate change. Intentional programming centered on the topic will be offered. Books chosen are ‘The Tantrum that Saved the World’ by Megan Herbert and Michael E. Mann for children; ‘Dry’ by Neal Shusterman for teens and ‘The Story of More: How we got to climate change and where to go from here’ by Hope Jackson.

Eastpointe Public Library

• Yamasaki in Detroit at 2 p.m. Feb. 23. John Gallagher, 2017 Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame inductee and member of The Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation, will be doing a program on Minoru Yamasaki. Yamasaki was one of the most influential architects of the 1960s. Based in Detroit, his design and influence can be seen throughout the city. • The library has an ongoing canned food drive. Non-perishable foods can be dropped off during our open hours.

• The library is open for curbside service and phone reference service during regular hours. Patrons can place holds on items through the catalog or call to request materials. It is open to the public. Masks must be worn and social distancing practiced. Patrons will have access to library materials, computers, and copiers. Materials returned to the library must be placed in the drop box.

Fraser Public Library

• PAWS to Read 5-6 p.m. Feb. 21. Children can read to a therapy dog.

• The library is open for curbside pick-up Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Patrons who wish to checkout materials should call the library (586-293-2055) to checkout over the phone and then call again when they’re in the parking lot.

Harrison Township Public Library

• Baby Play Group at 10 a.m. Feb. 27. Children 6-24 months can join Miss Tina as she performs 20 minutes of stories and songs and let babies play together for the rest of the time. Registration is not required Drop ins welcome.

• A Perilous Journey: MILibrary Virtual Teen Quest Feb. 1-28 Calling all Michigan teens to join the Winter 2023 MiLibrary Quest. Grab your sword and shield and get ready for a virtual adventure. • Blind Date with a Book Feb. 1-22 Browse the covers of the wrapped books on the Blind Date shelf and choose one that appeals to you. A Blind Date book may be unwrapped only after you borrow it. Like going on a blind date, you won’t know much about your book except for a short summary of the book on the front cover. Take a chance and read something outside your “genre comfortzone!”

• Knitting and Crochet Circle 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesdays Feb. 21 and 28. Knitters and crocheters of all levels are welcome. Please bring your own project and supplies. Items are donated to charitable organizations and the group is also accepting donations of yarn, fleece or craft store gift cards. Group donates to charitable organizations like Beaumont Little Angels, Project Linus, Compassion Pregnancy and more to give comfort items in times of need. Also accepting donations of Beanie Babies for children that are in need of comfort.

• March is Reading Month Bingo Challenge is from March 1-30. Grab a bingo card online or at the library and play along! All you have to do to get started is print off your bingo board (or get one at the library) and start reading! Get a bingo, and bring your card in for a special prize! One entry per person.

• Preschool Storytime 10 a.m. Wednesdays Jan. 18-March 22 (no storytime Feb. 22 or March 29) For those ages 2-5 to join for fun, stories, rhymes, dancing and more. No registration required. Drop-ins welcome.

• Residents can request materials be delivered to their homes. Request materials, once notified they are ready for pickup, contact the library at 586-329-1261 to set up delivery time.

Ray Township Library

• Friends of the Library and Historical Society has released its 2023 calendar titled ‘School Days: Lessons from Our Past’ which is available for purchase for $10 at the Ray Township offices and library as well as the Octagon House, Romeo Arts and Archives Center and Washington Museum. The calendar will feature historical images of the schools throughout the community, from the 1860’s one-room schoolhouses to the earliest Romeo Senior High School buildings as well as inspirational sayings on education and learning. • 1st Stop For Tots At Home kits. Families with children between the age of birth and age 3 that reside in St. Clair Shores can request a kit. They contain one board book, one Easy book, on shaky egg, once scarf, one set of bells, two rhythm sticks, one Basic Skills Practice Ring set, a rhyme booklet, a Tips sheet and TALK promotional materials for families to keep. • The Youth Services department, with the help of grant funding, has created 14 Explorer packs for children and families to check out. Each pack contains learning tools, non fiction books, activity sheets, identification guides and other manipulatives centered on an outdoor activity. Topics include insects, bird watching, astronomy water, hiking, plants and rocks. To check out an Explorer pack or for more information, ask at the Youth Services Desk.

Shelby Township Public Library

Curbside service has been reinstated and transition to policies similar to the library’s pandemic response to maintain as many services as possible while the library is closed. It will run 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Patrons can call 586739-7414 to arrange a pick-up.

Sterling Heights Public Library

• Library cardholders can reserve a time to use the Maker’s Space by appointment. Look for Maker Space Lab on the program calendar.

• Toddler Time and Preschool storytimes are both offered at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays. Registration is required. Check the library calendar for full details.

• PAWS for Reading 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays. The first 10 children to check in at the youth desk on Tuesday nights will be able to read to a therapy dog.

• The Upton House is open for self guided tours from 1-4 p.m. every Wednesday and second Sunday of the month. Register up to six people in a household. Registration only required for Wednesdays.

The library will be returning to virtual programming only.

Warren Public Libraries

• All Warren public library branches will be able to offer a telescope for patrons to check out with a valid library card thanks to being selected to be part of NASA @ My Library, an education initiative to increase and enhance science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) opportunities for library patrons. The Warren Civic Center library will offer telescope events throughout the year as well.

Warren Busch Branch Library

• Grab-and-Go Science at Busch Branch Library has science themed kits available for check out exploring topics in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with fun and kidfriendly hands on activities. Each kit also contains a related book and instructions. For children, tweens and teens ages six and up, recommended ages vary by kit and activity. More kits will be added to the collection soon. They can be checked out for 21 days and renewed up to two times and must be checked out and returned to the Busch Branch.

Warren Civic Center Library

• A Night Before the Oscars at 6 p.m. Feb. 28. Join us for an evening with local movie enthusiast Greg Black as he presents the 2023 Academy Awards preview night. Prepare yourself for a star-studded event in which you will learn about the nominees for the major awards, view movie trailers, and cast your vote for a chance to win a special prize if Hollywood votes your way on Oscar night.

• Nasa My Library Telescope Viewing 6:30 p.m. March 1 in the library garden. Children in grades K-5 can join to view the night sky outdoors. The Warren Astronomical Society will present information about space and provide a telescope for a safe viewing experience. Weather permitting Register online or by calling 586-751-0770.

• PAWS To Read 5-6 p.m. Wednesdays. Children of all ages can come and read to therapy dog Desmond, a 130 pound Newfypoo. The PAWS program welcomes new and struggling readers to read to a certified therapy dog. The goal is to provide a non-judgmental atmosphere in which kids can read without correction or interruption and learn not just to read, but to love reading as well.

• Babies Love Books is being relaunched with expanded kits. They are available for families that live in Warren with children from birth to age 3. Based on the Library of Michigan’s Ready to Read program and will focus on Talk, Sing, Read, Write and Play. Designed to help develop early literacy skills and instill a love of reading in the very young. Families who return a brief survey included with the kit will be eligible for a second kit with new books and activities.

• Families that are residents of Warren and has a child between the ages of 3-5 is eligible to receive a free early literacy kit to help prepare children for their kindergarten year. Kits include two activity workbooks and an early reader book to practice sight words. Kits are available for pickup at the Warren Civic Center Library and will also be available at children’s programs that are offsite. Children must be present for a kit to be issued.

• The library also has purchased Playaway Launchpads, which are tablets that are preloaded with educational preschool games and are available for checkout with a library card.

Warren Miller Branch

• Winter Break Drop in Play and Craft 12:30-7 p.m. Feb. 23 for those ages 4-11. There will be a craft, various games and STEAM activities in the children’s area. Drop in program, no registration required.

All Macomb County libraries, as part of the Suburban Library Cooperative, subscribe to RB Digital which has over 100 digital magazines that can be checked out immediately. They also offer educational services through Tutor.com, which provides homework help, test preparation and term paper and resume review. Students can use their student ID number to access those services.
