One 24-year-old man is dead and his father is in critical condition after an argument apparently escalated to gunfire inside a Warren home Friday morning.

According to Warren police, officers responded to a call in the 29000 block of Schoenherr Road at approximately 9:15 a.m. Friday and discovered a 53-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound to the face. The victim told police his son physically assaulted him, then retrieved a gun and shot his father. The father indicated to police that his son was still inside the residence near 12 Mile Road.

Members of Warren police’s special response team and crisis negotiations unit came to the scene to try and negotiate a peaceful resolution to the incident. One of the officers was able to look into a window of the residence where he observed the suspect laying on the floor not moving.

The 24-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene. His father was taken to a local hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The incident caused Schoenherr Road to be closed between 12 Mile and Common roads for about an hour on Friday morning.

Warren police investigators and evidence technicians executed a search warrant and were on the scene Friday afternoon gathering information. Investigators said they have learned the suspect documented struggles with mental illness.

“This incident is yet another tragic case of a person with a mental illness accessing a firearm and using it on a loved one during an altercation,” said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer. “Officers are encountering more and more persons with mental illnesses who are in need

of help.”

Dwyer said there is a great need for more treatment centers that are accessible for those with mental illness and their families.

“Too often law enforcement and the community have limited options and face long delays with getting people the proper mental health services they need before an act of violence occurs,” said Dwyer. “This incident underscores the fact that mental illness is a serious issue which affects all of us.”
