Anchor Bay, Chippewa Valley United set for regional final
A pair of Macomb Area Conference Red Division teams will decide a regional hockey tournament.
Anchor Bay skates against division co-champion Chippewa Valley United at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in a Division 1 final at Mount Clemens Ice Arena.
The Tars qualified with a 2-1 semifinal victory over White Division champion Utica-Ford, and CVU earned the berth with an 8-0 victory over L’Anse Creuse Unified.
Justin Ryckegham’s goal broke a 1-1 tie against UticaFord in the second period.
Aidan French scored for the Tars in the first period before Cameron Kim’s goal off an assist by Carson Konczalski tied the game.
Mark Bonnay and Darren Jones had assists for the Tars. David Girling was the winning goalie with 33 saves.
Senior Evan Johnston scored three goals in Chippewa Valley United’s victory.
Karson Schriner had a goal and two assists and Shane Stone and Kevin Dolney had a goal and an assist apiece. Alex Michalik and Kaden Jackson scored a goal each.
Josh Sosnowski was the winning goalie.
Chippewa Valley United defeated Anchor Bay twice during the regular season. The Tars are looking for their first regional championship since 2016.
This is Chippewa Valley United’s first season as a combined team of players from
Dakota and Chippewa Valley. Coach Jim Andonoff’s club has won its last nine games.
The Anchor Bay/CVU winner will play in either Detroit Catholic Central or M-1 in a quarterfinal game at Mount Clemens on March 4.
Also Wednesday, St. Clair Shores Unified plays De La Salle Collegiate in a Division 2 regional final at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Clemens. The winner of that game plays either Brother Rice or White Lake Lakeland at 6:30 p.m. on March 4 at the St. Clair Shores Civic Arena.
State semifinals (March 9-10) and finals (March 11) for all divisions will be at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.
