Sanders watches South Lake defeat Country Day

South Lake started the final week of the boys basketball regular season with a victory.

Herman Wrenn had a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday night to lead the Cavaliers to a 57-49 non-league victory over Detroit Country Day with former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders in the audience.

The MAC Gold Division Cav- aliers took a team photo with the Pro Football Hall of Fame member after the game. Sand- ers’ son Nick played for Detroit Country Day before walking on at Michigan State.

Senior J’Mari Wiggins scored 20 points for Detroit Country Day.

South Lake is 4-15 with one regular-season game remaining. The Cavaliers play in the Division 2 district tournament at Detroit Osborn next week.

Detroit Country Day is 6-13.

AUSTIN CATHOLIC 53, KIMBALL LANDMARK 27 Junior Ethan Fisher scored a game-high 21 points to lead Austin (6-11). Coach Ron Glodich’s team plays Detroit Aerospace on Friday.

L’ANSE CREUSE 70, ROMEO 56

Romeo’s Tim Kewley had 19 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocks for a triple-double. Manny Towne added 11 points.

UTICA 62, ROCHESTER 52

and added four rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead Utica to the non-league victory. Sebastian Soriano had 13 points and Ali Hasan 11 points and nine rebounds. Khamani Potts had 12 points and Eli Kalaj 10 for Rochester. Playing its first game in a week, Utica trailed by eight points at halftime but outscored the Falcons by 18 in the second half. The MAC Blue cochampion is 14-5 overall.

STEVENSON 56, EASTPOINTE 54

Zach Alindogan scored 16 points, Caynon Love 12 and Daron Bobbit and Lucas Timbuc 10 apiece for Stevenson in the MAC crossover. Aaron Perry scored 16 points and Courtrion Holt 11 for Eastpointe.

Clay Roszczewsk­i made six triples and scored 20 points for Almont. Marko Radisaljev­ic added 15 points. Griffin Mabery had 22 points for North Branch in the BWAC game.

Wrestling

Caleb Weiand of Dakota tries to repeat as a state champion at Ford Field this weekend.

The senior who has a 43-0 record this season won the title at 112 pounds last year. He’s one of 16 wrestlers who qualified at 120 for this year’s finals that begin Friday.

Doors open at 9 a.m.,

and the Grand March begins at 10. Round 1 starts at 10:30. Quarterfin­als start at 3:15 p.m. and semifinals at 6:30.

On Saturday, doors open at 8 a.m. and consolatio­n bouts start at 9. The arena will be cleared following consolatio­n matches, and doors open for the finals at 2 p.m. The Grand March starts at 2:50, and championsh­ip matches begin at 3:30.
