JARS opens township’s first licensed dispensary
Six years after Michigan residents voted to legalize recreational cannabis, Chesterfield Township this week opened its first pot retail store.
JARS Cannabis on Monday officially opened the township’s first recreational cannabis dispensary, marking the Troybased company’s 21st location in Michigan. Business was reportedly strong despite a lack of grand opening marketing hype.
Chesterfield’s cannabis retail outlet is located in a 3,100-square-foot facility on Gratiot Avenue, just north of 23 Mile Road. Before that, the site sat vacant.
“The historic opening of Jars Cannabis in Chesterfield Township is a reflection of the community’s trust and our commitment to delivering a one-of-akind cannabis experience,” said Jars Cannabis COO, Raymond Abro.
He extended the company’s thanks to Chesterfield Township Supervisor Brad Kersten, Clerk Cindy Berry, and Trustee David Joseph for “their dedicated efforts” in securing the community’s first recreational cannabis license. He added that he looks forward to becoming an integral part of the township.
The Michigan marijuana industry reported $3 billion in total sales in 2023, according to the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency. That puts the Great Lakes in second place among the largest cannabis markets in the nation, after California, according to the state’s Department of Tax and Fee Administration.
Chesterfield Township was among hundreds of municipalities that voted to opt out of any granting of cannabis licenses after Michigan voters approved the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2018. A petition drive was launched four years later.
The marijuana proposal passed with 57% of the 20,700 voters casting ballots
in support of the measure.
Chesterfield officials then began working to craft an ordinance to manage marijuana.
JARS officials also say the businesses contribute to the economic vitality of Chesterfield Township, creating new jobs and placing the business on the tax rolls.
Other Macomb County communities that have grappled with the issue and still do not have licensed pot shops include Warren and Clinton Township. Plans are in the works for shops to come to Warren though protracted legal action has slowed that while Clinton Township voters rejected the establishment of these businesses in their community.
With the opening of JARS’ shop, the dispensary offers selection of hundreds of flowers and pre-rolls, edibles, vapes, concentrates topicals and tinctures with a variety of price points.
The new dispensary also has a price match guarantee where if a product is available at select competitors for a lower price at the time of purchase, JARS will match that price. It also has curbside pickup and delivery options.
JARS has 40 retail storefronts in Michigan, Arizona and Colorado.
JARS Chesterfield is located at at 51679 Gratiot Avenue and is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. More information is available at shopJARS.com, follow @JARS_life on Instagram, or call 1877-420JARS.
