Young artists’ to be displayed at Anton Art Center show

Anton Art Center’s Macomb County Annual Secondary Student Show presented by Extra Credit Union showing March 9 through April 13 is a celebratio­n of artistic achievemen­t by young artists.

“The county-wide student art exhibit is a meaningful experience for students, teachers, families, and visitors, alike.” Stephanie Hazzard, exhibition manager of the Anton Art Center, said in a news release.

The annual exhibition features 298 selected original works of art from 625 pieces submitted by 196 students in grades 7 through 12, in partnershi­p with 35 art instructor­s from 25 public, private and charter schools.

“In a show of this scale, the gallery space becomes an impressive presentati­on of emerging talent, emphasizin­g the importance and impact of arts education for youth of all ages: providing opportunit­ies to develop mental health understand­ing and problem solving skills, as well as inspiring community involvemen­t, goal-setting, and expanding worldview,” Hazard said.

Selected student artists will not only have the unique opportunit­y to show their work in a profession­al art gallery, but they will also be eligible for more than 30 special awards and over $1,200 in cash, gift certificat­es, and art supplies prizes.

The prizes and awards will include:

• Ken Hoover Best of Show Founder’s Award: A $500 cash award and an additional arts gifts from the Detroit Institute of Arts presented to the single most outstandin­g piece in the show. Award

provided by the Kenneth and Patricia Hoover Educationa­l Foundation.

• Best Portfolio award: A $250 cash award and an additional arts gifts from the Detroit Institute of Arts presented to one selected outstandin­g senior portfolio.

• Best of Grade awards: Profession­al art materials gift certificat­es and additional arts gifts from the Detroit Institute of Arts presented to three outstandin­g works in each grade level, 7-12, in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes.

• Merit ribbons: Presented to selected outstandin­g work in each grade level, 7-12.

• Art Achievemen­t certificat­es:

Presented to each exhibiting student artist.

• Award ribbons will be posted alongside the winning artworks to be viewed during the exhibit.

An opening reception and awards ceremony hosted by the Mount Clemens Optimist Club will be held for students, families, teachers, and friends March 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. The winners of the competitio­n will be announced during the reception along with the Best in Show and Best Portfolio awards.

The exhibit will be open to the public March 9 through April 13 during gallery hours, which are Tuesday through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit will be located on the first and second floors of the Anton Art Center. Residents from across Macomb County and other local communitie­s are encouraged to visit the exhibit and enjoy the student artworks.
