For those fascinated by beautiful and exotic tropical fish, the Motor City Aquarium Society’s annual spring auction was the place to be on Saturday.

Hobbyists crowded the activity center at St. Basil Catholic Church in Sterling Heights to find the perfect additions for their aquariums, everything from Goldfish to Angelfish.

The auction attracted tropical fish enthusiasts from all around Metro Detroit. Some were there to buy, some to sell, and some like Motor City Aquarium Society Vice President Mike Howe of Auburn Hills were doing a little bit of both.

“I’ve been into fish since I was a kid,” Howe said. “I brought fish to sell, but I also bought these endangered Mexican fish that I really like and I also bought

several plants.”

Howe said the semi annual auctions are great, no matter what level of tropical fish hobbyist you are.

“People who are new to it tend to buy a variety of fish,” said Howe. “But after you do it for a long time like

I have, you tend to find certain types of fish that you really like and come to the auction specifically to find a particular fish.”

Fish can sell for anywhere from $1 to more than $100.

“These are hand raised fish that you are not going to find at the fish store or anywhere else,” said Warren resident and Motor City Aquarium Society President David Costa. “That is what makes the auctions so popular; it is the only place that you can really find some of these fish.”

Costa said the auction is also a great place to share information with others who are passionate about raising and keeping tropical fish. The Motor City Aquarium Society has regular meetings on the second Thursday of every month where people can also connect and discuss all things aquatic.

Saturday’s auction was one of two the Society holds each year. The next auction will be in Nov.4 at St. Basil.
