Trio chosen as RCS Outstanding Teachers of the Year
Lynn Sharpe always makes her students feel special but second-graders at Green Elementary are feeling even more love for their teacher as she is one of three educators including Danielle Forsythe at Roseville Middle School and Sarah Drouin at Roseville High School being honored as Roseville Community Schools 2023-2024 Outstanding Teachers of the Year.
Sharpe pours her heart and soul into
teaching.
Forsythe makes Roseville Middle School a better place for students and staff.
And thanks to Sarah Drouin, Roseville High School is likely to have a few graduates interested in a career in journalism.
These are just a few of the reasons Sharpe, Forsythe and Drouin were named recipients of the annual award.
“Ms. Sharpe is always researching and trying to find new and creative ways to reach her students,” Donna Ambrose, Green Elementary principal, said in a news release. “She is consistent and fair with all her students.”
Sharpe began her career as a kindergarten teacher at Fountain Elementary, before moving on to Kaiser Elementary. After four years of giving children a wonderful start in school Sharpe moved on to teach second graders at Green Elementary, where she’s been teaching for the past 12 years. Ambrose said Sharpe’s teaching style helps to make all of the students in her class feel welcome and loved.
“Students are allowed to make mistakes without being made to feel inferior,” Ambrose said. “She keeps her students engaged by making up games to get them excited for phonics, reading, and math. Ms. Sharpe has made it a point to make sure every child feels successful by differentiating assignments to meet everyone’s needs while still challenging them.”
Teaching one of the tougher subjects in school is Forsythe, who has spent the past seven years teaching middle school students algebra, seventh grade math, and seventh grade
Math Attack. She started her career at Kment Elementary as an interventionist and for several years has taught the district’s summer extended learning program.
“She creates a classroom culture and environment where all students feel safe, heard, and supported regardless of their ability level,” said Chris LaFeve, Roseville Middle School principal. “She constantly tries out new ideas to get her students engaged and learning in her classroom. Her focus is always on her students and what she can do to be the best teacher she can be.”
Drouin is celebrating her silver anniversary this year. During her 25 years at Roseville High School, she has taught a variety of ELA courses including journalism. She currently teaches Journalism I (yearbook/online newspaper), Journalism II, Speech/Debate, and English 11. She has served as newspaper advisor her entire career, and in 2019 also took over as yearbook advisor.
“Mrs. Drouin is an outstanding teacher who holds her students to high expectations,” said Jason Bettin, RHS principal. “She runs our Journalism I and II courses, which produces our Panther Prowl student newspaper and our school yearbook. Every year her students produce outstanding publications that they should be proud of. They are testaments to all the hard work Mrs. Drouin puts forth to have an excellent journalism program here at RHS.”
Applauding the 2024 Teachers of the Year is Roseville Community Schools Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski.
“Each year, we honor three teachers who exemplify excellence both inside and outside of the classroom, and this year is no exception. Ms. Sharpe, Mrs. Forsythe, and Mrs. Drouin are enthusiastic, motivating educators that make a difference in our students’ lives. Our district is lucky to have them,” said Blaszkowski.
What also makes the award special is honorees are nominated by peers, administrators, students, family members, or community members. Each candidate must have a minimum of three completed questionnaires to be considered. A review committee, which is made up of principals from all levels and the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, meets to choose two candidates from each level to present to the superintendent for final review, with the superintendent making the final choices.
The winners will be honored at the MISD’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards banquet on April 11.
