Assumption Cultural Center announces its spring events and programs
Choose from concerts, yoga classes, pickleball, soup and more
Assumption Cultural Center’s Greek Festival is a big event for the summer.
However, the center is also known for its selection of spring programs, classes and events, which are both entertaining and enriching.
New to this year’s lineup of activities are two spring concerts; Grosse Pointe North High School will present an uplifting concert at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church at 7 p.m. March 14 and April 4, Assumption Cultural Center will present a concert featuring Marina and Natasha Stojanovska, siblings from Macedonia, who not only have their own solo careers as performers and teachers but as the “Stojanovska Sisters.” The award-winning duo will be playing a variety of pieces including original compositions by Marina’s husband Colin Payne.
Tickets for the Stojanovska Sisters are $20 each.
Other programs and events for 2024 include:
• Summer Camp for Kids — Registration is now open for Camp Imagination, a summer program for children ages 1-6 and a youth camp for ages 7-10.
• The camps are hosted by Assumption’s Nursery School and Toddler Center, which will also be presenting its annual Denim and Diamonds Auction Gala on May 10. The annual event and fundraiser will feature an evening of hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, auction items, raffles and much more.
• Fitness program — Assumption’s Kalosomatics is a great opportunity for looking to get in shape for the summer or just a fun exercise program. Kalosomatics is an exercise, for women and co-ed classes, that combines aerobics, yoga and Pilates-like workouts together. Beginner, intermediate and senior classes will be offered, during the day or evening.
• Students may alternate their classes and time in order to accommodate their personal schedules. This is a session being offered but participants may join the class at any time; registration fees will be prorated from that point. New students
can also attend a class free for one week and seniors are given a 25% discount.
• Two yoga classes will also be offered this spring: Gentle Mat Yoga and Yin Yoga. In Gentle Mat Yoga students are guided through gentle postures that link breath with movement while increasing strength and flexibility. In Yin Yoga, students hold postures that work the muscles like a deep massage.
Other fitness classes will include Tae Kwon Do Karate for adults and children, offering the opportunity to develop strength while learning the art of discipline.
• Pickleball at Assumption — Assumption
was among the first centers to offer courts for pickleball and that will continue throughout the spring. In addition to group pickleball play, Assumption will offer a number of beginner clinics for those who have yet to discover the sport that resembles a combination of ping pong and tennis.
• Courts are available for private rentals including early times from 7 to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday.
• Self improvement — Language programs this year will include a French language class taught by the Alliance Francaise de Grosse Pointe at Assumption and a Greek language class for beginners and
teens, advanced beginners and intermediates.
• Travel with Assumption — Those looking to experience culture in another country can choose from two excursions including a motorcoach trip May 18-24 to Montreal and Quebec City, Canada and a trip to Greece, Sept. 10-24.
• Other events and activities will include the American Red Cross Blood Drive on March 29 and Assumption’s 14th Annual Garage Sale June 14 and 15.
• Mother’s Day Brunch or Soups to Go? — Marchiori catering at Assumption will also be offering food for special events including its annual Lenten Seafood Buffets and a Mother’s Day Gourmet Brunch and every day all year long Assumption’s caterer offers patrons and visitors a selection of homemade soups to go.
