Woman accused of driving drunk against traffic while on M-53

Alexandria Remington charged with drug possession, OWI

A 37-year-old Macomb Township woman has been charged with drunken driving after she was arrested for driving against traffic in the southbound lanes of the M-53 freeway in Shelby Township.

19 in 41-A District

Court on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance/analogues and a misdemeano­r charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicate­d.

Remington was arrested after driving several miles in the wrong direction of the freeway around midnight on March 18. Shelby Township officers and Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies worked to alert other motorists of the situation before stopping her and making an arrest, police said.

“I am thankful for our officer’s quick response to alert other drivers and shut down the freeway, helping to avoid a serious head-on crash,” Shelby Township Police Chief

Robert Shelide said in a news release. “Our department will continue to have zero tolerance for drivers who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Shelby Township.”

If she is convicted, Remington faces up to two years for the analogues possession charge.

According to Shelby Township police, officers were notified of a black Dodge Ram driving in the wrong direction around M-53 and 23 Mile Road.

Officers arrived and attempted to stop the driver and tried to shut down the freeway to avoid a possible head on crash with other drivers.

Remington allegedly continued to 27 Mile Road, where she finally stopped.

Police spoke to the woman driving the truck and said they could smell alcohol on her breath. After conducting field sobriety tests on the driver, they asked her to take a portable breathalyz­er test but she refused.

Remington was then arrested.

Shelby Township police on Tuesday released police dashboard camera footage of the incident.
