Ford II’s Anayya Davis earns 2nd-team All-State honors
Michigan AP selects Summer Davis of West Bloomfield as D1 Player of the Year
When West Bloomfield point guard Destiny Washington fouled out of the Division 1 semifinal against Rockford, she trusted her teammates would have her back.
When the Lakers’ Indya Davis called for the basketball in the waning seconds of regulation, she knew her twin sister trusted her.
Summer Davis validated the trust of both, setting up her twin for the buzzer-beating, game-tying 3-pointer to send the game to overtime. It kept the season alive for the Lakers, who would go on to win that game as well as the next contest to claim a second state title in three seasons.
“That just proves her versatility, after playing on the wing all game,” said West Bloomfield coach Darrin McAllister of Summer Davis, who switched to the point in Washington’s absence, and went 11 for 14 from the free-throw line in OT.
Summer Davis was named the Michigan Associated Press Division 1 Player of the Year by vote of a panel of 15 sports writers, the final accolade in a prep career filled with them for both sisters.
Indya was the Gatorade Michigan Player of the Year last season, while Summer won it this year, along with similar honors from MaxPreps, and now AP.
“For her to win it this year just made me happy, to both have our names up in the West Bloomfield gym,” Indya Davis said.
The one that eluded them was Miss Basketball, where they finished fourth and fifth among the five finalists, a result that sat wrong with McAllister.
“Some people got it wrong, when it comes down to a trophy that we all know,” McAllister after a state tournament semifinal. “We all know what I’m speaking about. These players right here are the real deal. And if you don’t know that, then you don’t know basketball.”
The individual accolades weren’t top of mind for the players, though.
“We came here for one goal, to win a state championship,” said Summer Davis, who averaged 18.2 points, four assists, rebounds and steals per game for the Lakers, finishing with 1,540 points.
