Anton Art Center names Matthews new executive director
The Anton Art Center has a new leader.
Matt Matthews of Romeo will over as executive director of the nonprofit that has been working to build an open community around creative expression by presenting a wide array of programming that enriches and inspires people of all ages through the arts since 1969.
“I am excited for the opportunity to join the Anton Art Center, an organization with such a rich and impactful 50-plus year history in Mount Clemens,” Matthews said in a news release.
Matthews, who has more than a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, most
recently as associate director at Playworks Michigan, said he was particularly inspired by his discussions with the Anton Art Center’s board and team members.
“Their sincere and intentional desire to be a hub of culture and community in Macomb County and across southeast Michigan is inspiring,” said Matthews, who
worked with diverse communities building relationships with key stakeholders and collaborating on programs that promote social equity while a director at Playworks
Michigan.
He also developed strategic partnerships with individual donors, professional sports teams, corporations, and foundations.
“I look forward to contributing my experience as a relationship builder and fundraiser to help the organization grow in its program and financial goals,” added Matthews, who also served as a Michigan State Court Administrative Office qualified mediator and specialist in conflict resolution, facilitating training for diverse groups of participants throughout the Midwest.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University focused on team development and group dynamics.
The Art Center’s search for a new executive director began last year upon the departure of Phil Gilchrist, who left to pursue new endeavors, which included becoming Advancing Macomb’s new executive director. He had been with the nonprofit for eight years.
Peggy DiMercurio, who is the education and community engagement manager, was appointed to the position of interim director during the search process.
